TOKYO

MAKING MY WAY THROUGH ASIA....I  DECIDED TO STOP IN JAPAN THIS TIME AND CHECK OUT SOME INDIGO DYE MASTERS AND  COUNTLESS OTHER ARTISANS  WHO CONTINUE TO PRACTICE THEIR CRAFTS HERE--LIKE NO WHERE ELSE!

FOR THE LAST FEW DAYS, I HAVE BEEN IN TOKYO. UNFORTUNATELY, ALTHOUGH THE DOLLAR IS STRONG IN MOST COUNTRIES AT THE MOMENT,  JAPAN REMAINS VERY EXPENSIVE FOR AMERICANS.  THE YEN/DOLLAR SITUATION HAS NOT IMPROVED THE SITUATION FOR PEOPLE LIKE ME.

FROM WHAT I  GATHER FROM THE JAPANESE PEOPLE WHO HAVE SPOKEN TO ME ABOUT IT (WHICH IS NOT MANY BECAUSE-- FAMOUSLY, HARDLY ANYONE HERE SPEAKS ENGLISH!), THEY ARE NOT HAPPY ABOUT THE WAY THEIR GOVERNMENT HAS HANDLED THE CURRENCY SITUATIION.  EXPORTS ARE STILL WEAK BECAUSE JAPANESE PRODUCTS ARE PROHIBITIVELY EXPENSIVE.

NONETHELESS,  IT IS  AN ENORMOUS  PRIVILEGE TO WALK AROUND THIS  LAYERED MASTERPIECE OF A CITY-- FEELING LIKE I AM  A CHARACTER LIVING IN AN M. C. ESCHER DRAWING.  HERE ARE SOME PHOTOS SO FAR
